Current Piece in Development

"Family Dollar"

In 2016, Artstillery was newly-formed. We had no home, and we were still trying to figure out who we were. For $1 a month, a developer in Dallas allowed us to use a property off West Main Street with three dilapidated shotgun houses on it. Our core team of Artstillery members cleaned these homes for four hot summer months, and we could feel the untold stories inside of them.

We felt the spirits of dead animals trapped in the homes and found their skulls, along with refrigerators still full with food despite no electricity for months, drawings from children falling off walls, hypodermic needles, and debris all over the property.

What we didn't expect to find was a journal.

One steamy weekend, team members Alisa Eykilis and Ilknur Ozgur were walking one of the houses as Alisa shot photos. They came across a journal and brought it outside. When it accidentally fell to the ground, the wind turned its pages. Alisa started to shoot video of the pages turning in the wind right as the train that runs behind the property created a stir. That was when we knew we had our first project, inside the journal were the entries from Shirley, a community member who had aged on West Main Street. W
e brought these stories to life through a piece we titled Family Dollar.
